"Contemporary Clinical Maxillofacial Radiology:
Pixel Perception and Voxel Vision"

Dr. William C. Scarfe
Professor of Radiology and Imaging Sciences
University of Louisville School of Dentistry

The introduction of digital technology more than 20 years ago has resulted in a paradigm shift in dental radiology. Sensor and phosphor plate detectors are regularly used in many dental practices today, and the introduction of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have enabled volumetric three-dimensional capture of maxillofacial hard and soft tissue anatomy. The full benefit of these technologies can only be achieved when clinicians dynamically interact with imaging data.

This course will provide participants with a detailed knowledge of the technology, procedures and specific clinical applications involved in optimizing their two dimensional “pixel perception” (intra and extra-oral radiography) and their three dimensional “voxel vision” (CBCT and MRI). A detailed review of two and three dimensional radiographic anatomy and pathology will also be provided.  Hands-on case workshop with working versions of image enhancement software for caries diagnosis and CBCT interpretation, pre-course study material and much more! Make sure you bring your laptop.

Professor Scarfe graduated from the University Of Adelaide School Of Dentistry (1982) and was awarded Fellowship in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (1986). He completed a certificate in Dental Diagnostic Science and a Masters from the Graduate School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (1992). He has been faculty at the University of Louisville since 1993. He is a specialist OMF radiologist and co-director of Diagnostic Maxillofacial Imaging University Associates (www.dmfiua.com), a university-based, private cone beam imaging facility established in 2004. Dr. Scarfe has published extensively on cone beam imaging, presented internationally as well as nationally and is active in research on the clinical applications of cone beam imaging. Dr. Scarfe is an excellent speaker—be sure not to miss him!

Tuition is $650.00, please mail your check to:
